The following morning, after Mila burst into my room, Colt had gone into the bathroom waiting for us to finish chatting. When he comes back out, he’s fully dressed.

“I gotta go, baby. I love you; I’ll see you later.”

“I love you too,” I say kissing him.

Later comes and I haven’t seen him. I am starting to get worried. Late at night, I pull open my bedroom door, and expect him to just be there, but Davis and Linlee are there instead. Davis is a rotating agent. I met him yesterday morning. He seems like a good man. I grab Linlee by her forearm and drag her inside my room.

“Where is he, Linz?”

“He had a family emergency. He left a while ago. He said he’d call you. I take it he didn’t.”

“I don’t know. Hang on.” Going over to my purse, I pull out my phone. Twenty missed calls, all from Colt. I never have the ringer on. Fuck. “He called,” I say calling my voicemail.

“Baby, I had to go home. My dad died. Call me when you get this message. I love you,” Colt’s voice says through the phone.

“What do you want to do?” Linlee asked me.

“We’re going to Chicago,” I say resolutely.
